That Doctor Who announcement

I'm sure all of us have seen this by now.

I'm not sure what to think.

On the one hand, a year with very little Doctor Who *weeps* But at least we get the fifth series confirmed, it's not like we're left thinking that it's being allowed to trickle off in specials. I am apprehensive that Rusty is going to try writing the specials all by himself. Because then they probably will be crappy. On the other hand, does this mean that David is being let off to do Hamlet and will be coming back for the fifth series? *oh please*

On the gripping hand, people saying that 'it's on hiatus because Martha was rubbish!1' should go and write DT/BP RFP or something. It wasn't Martha that was rubbish, it was Rusty's finale. And she can kick your arse wholesale.

This means that virtually my only Who fix for a year will come from fanfiction. Given that most Who fic knocks the parts I actually find interesting on their head in favour of more romance this does not please me. We need more stories about the Daleks exterminating and less about the Doctor and Rose or the Master (or possibly all three at the same time, you never know) slobbering over each other.

I'm not really that enthused by the idea of RTD-written specials either.

Well, I haven't seen the whole third series yet, but I disagree with the notion that Martha is rubbish. I found her immediately likable.

It somehow seems much less objectionable the way they do it canon where we get a plot mixed in with it. Well, except when the Master's, ah, getting a little too excited about talking to the Doctor on the phone. That was laying it on ever so slightly too thick for my tastes. Subtlety, thy name is not Russell T Davies.

Torchwood, of course, is the exception, what with it being utterly terrible and not worth the effort it takes to switch the TV on and select the channel to watch it.

Love and Monsters gets half a point from me for having Shirley Henderson in it. And then promptly loses it again for the appallingly ill-advised paving-stone oral sex reference.

Honestly, some people.

I like Rose, too. Really. Average girl gets to do all these amazing things, it's awesome. But what I liked about Martha is that she had education and skills to bring to the table, and that was really cool. You could see where that open mind and curiosity that the Doctor would find appealing came from.

I haven't seen too many Sarah Jane episodes. I only got into Doctor Who with Eccleston. I tried watching on PBS as a teen, but I didn't see what the fuss was about. I think maybe it was the right thing at the wrong time, if you know what I mean. When DW went on hiatus last time, I filled the void by going to the video store and renting what few DVDs they had. They wre mostly Tom Baker with Romana (the first Romana; I guess there were two?, and they had one with Sarah Jane and one with Leela. We also saw one episode each of the second and third Doctor, plus one with Sylvester McCoy. Now that I'm older and into the new series I'm more curious and appreciative of what came before and the evolution intrigues me. I wish I could get every episode ever and REALLY catch up.

Oh, I also saw the conversation you were having with your friend about fanfic and romance. Have you tried this place? http://p066.ezboard.com/fnerfherdersplaygroundfrm67.showMessage?topicID=2.topicm I haven't had much of a chance to scope out the fic there but there appear to be both men and women posting there, and as far as I can see the fic is more like an episode versus being dominated by romantic missing moments, etc. I haven't had much time. but if you get a few minutes, check it out and see if maybe it's more like what you and your friend are after.

Crap, that was the wrong link. What I gave you is the link to the thread where I talk about it at the Playground. THIS is the link to Timelord: http://p070.ezboard.com/btimelord

Hope you like it.
