Watching Extended Return of the King. I bawl like an infant through the whole end sequence, both for the legitimate story reasons and for the mangled Tolkien. You know, that really could have been a superlative film. Growl.
One thing I noticed was how cramped it was, both geographically and timewise. You feel that Rohan, Gondor and Mordor are all tiny countries all on top of each other, and that it all takes place in about three days.

I noticed the cramped feel too. When they were at the Black Gate I thought "hang on... it looks like it took them about ten minutes to get their army there!"

Yes, and it looks like you could stand in Minas Tirith and throw a biscuit over into Mount Doom. Frodo and Sam seem to take like half a day to get from Cirith Ungol to Mount Doom.
