So LiveJournal has messed up again, what with allowing comments on locked posts to be cross-posted to Facebook/Twitter, and sending pingbacks from locked posts.

So, here are Dreamwidth invite codes for anyone who wants them. Comment if you're using one.

Beta version under testing here.

It's a lot better than the last attempt they made. The only problems for me are 1) too much whitespace at the top and not enough at the bottom 2) still no link to the tags page after how many years?

This was me hacking around with the code for ten minutes to try to fix the excess whitespace.

What do you all think of it?

I've just transferred all my posts over to insanejournal. Sorry for the mad spam, flist on ij.

Sadly the tags didn't transfer across. Grrrr.

Now I'm going to try to double-post to both journals using Semagic

ONE DAY CONTENT STRIKE

For one day, Friday, March 21, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.

SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site.

So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT, let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT.

This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase.

Full information at The Fox's Den.

SPREAD THE WORD!

First they do away with Basic accounts for new users, then they censor fanfiction from the "popular interests" page. Ever feel a little squeezed?

Grrrrr SUP

No new Basic accounts can be created as of yesterday.

So, are we leaving LJ now or what? Where's everyone's backups? I'm catre on GJ and jediowl on JF, and am on IJ as thewhiteowl.

I mean, I don't want to leave LJ. I like it here. I have a perm account (until SUP decides to downgrade it to Plus). But if everyone else goes, there's nothing to stay for.

Cannot be bothered to watch this week's Torchwood in the iPlayer. Everyone's saying it's rubbish, so I may give it a miss.
owl: Stylized barn owl (starbuck)
OK, LJ: divvy up the comment notifications now, please.

Is it just me or are the rest of you not getting them either?
owl: (Ron2)
Everyone go over here and vote for 'only the journal holder can see custom filters'.

Unless you really want people to find out you've got them on a filter called 'Boring People from Work', of course.

Once More with Epic Fail, SixApart.

They never do learn, do they? They've introduced flagging adult content and also a 'flag' icon on other people's posts. Apart from the point that IMO those are related but different features and the conflation is not a happy one, they didn't bother telling us in the original post what they'd put in place against trolls, etc, etc, and had to post clarification the next day.

It could do with a bit more clarification, too. what's the definition of 'Adult Concepts', for example? Would it include this fic? (That's not a rhetorical question, btw, I really am slightly concerned about it).

Thinly disguised ads in [livejournal.com profile] news? Once again, LJ, Y HALO THAR EPIC FAIL.

On a brighter note, A Harry Potter Plain White Ts parody. This was played on Radio One—filking is now mainstream!
owl: Stylized barn owl (grrr)
Does anyone else find that LJ pages ending in #cutid1 take forever to load? I have to cut it off the URL to get them to come up at all (Firefox, XP, criminally useless dialup).

I still can't get LJ Archive to work, despite downloading .NET 3.0 to make it happy. It works for one of my journals, but not this one. I suspect some eejit has stuck a daft smiley in a comment somewhere that the program is interpreting as code. Why can't LJ export your journal with comments in a readable format themselves?

I love it when you find that someone you know in one fandom shares some of your others. Last week [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 emailed me saying, "I didn't know you ran an Antonia Forest comm!" I would have squee'd loudly if I hadn't been in work. It turned out that she'd just found the novels in the university library and is currently working her way through them. And the lolcat thing is not her fault really.

As far as I can remember, every last one of you is in fandom. Go and join [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts. It's to say we're here, and we can tell the difference between paedophiles and fictional characters, abuse survivors and people who want to discuss Lolita.

Oh, looks like LJ are back-pedalling so hard their chain's come off.

In others news, can someone stop the Sun from publishing made-up stories about Doctor Who?

Suspendgate 07--here we go again.

Apparently having an interest that is illegal is equivalent to soliciting the illegal behaviour, according to Teh Intarweb Lawyers. So if you list 'rape' or 'incest' ot 'underage sex' as an interest, you're gone. Perma-suspended. Even if the reason you list is is because you're a survivor, in at least one case. Also members of comms that list the interests, apparently.

More.

They can't get me for pr0n, but I'm worried what the next verbotten thing will be—copyright infringement?

And LJArchive keeps giving me errors. Haven't been able to get the darn thing to work for years.

They're talking about taking away the lovely Vertigo and replacing it with an ugly floating box. And they gave us a poll with the issue thoroughly confused with that of being able to customise site scheme colours. Go over and vote for Vertigo to stay, it's losing at the moment. Perhaps we could get a meme going....

Today's the day for starting a chapter-a-day re-read of HP if you want to finish in time for Deathly Hallows.

Anna Nicole Smith has died. I haven't seen so much fuss over cause of death since Diana died.
Perhaps now we can finally hear the last of Jade Goody? It's astonishing how people stay famous for being famous, especially when they became famous for something like a reality show in the first place.

Oh, and when the news hit [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt, it BRAKE TEH INTARWEBZ LiveJournal

Oh, and it looks like we'll finally be getting a list of tags to choose from on the update page at some point. Only about two years behind...
owl: Stylized barn owl (tracking)
The Manage Profile Page now has a series of ticky boxes to pick interests. Yuk. And [livejournal.com profile] brad doesn't like it either*.

Aren't those interests overused already without encouraging people to add them? It's practically impossible to search by them because so many users have I've unclicked 'computers', changed 'writing' to 'writing fiction' and 'history' to 'European history', but what about 'books' and 'reading'?

I've made a tag called 'livejournal whinging', because I seem to be doing that a lot lately. I love LJ, and I definitely don't complain about everything; I like the nav strip and the notification system is great. It's just all this ad stuff I don't like. I wouldn't mind seeing a 'this feature is sponsered by' on the page for the SMS, when it arrives, and I'm permanent, so I'm not affected by plus people's ads, but the sponsored comm left a bad taste in my mouth.

On the bright side, the 404 page is fun. Make sure to refresh it a few times! My favourite is the 'All your base are belong to Frank' one.

Over on [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz, they announced the arrival of more sponsored features, ones that will be visible to paid/perm users; an SMS service and the arrival of sponsored communities. Cue 68 pages, to date, of disgruntled comments. [livejournal.com profile] brad does damage control. And so does [livejournal.com profile] burr86. And they change the icon and utter soothingly some more. [livejournal.com profile] brad continues here.

I'm not concerned about SMS because, like voice posts, it probably won't be available in the UK. I took a look at the first sponsored comm, [livejournal.com profile] scienceofsleep. (Note the sponsored comm icon, utterly distinguishable from the normal one if you squint, and unless you happen to be colour-blind).
Its maintainters and members have a suspiciously high proportion of new journals. In typical LJ fashion, the mob have gathered and are calling them on this.

Why on earth did the advertisers not announce who they were up-front, and whatever features (news, exclusive pics, whatever) LJers are supposed to get out of the community? Surely anyone with half a brain could have worked out that making posts in extravagant praise of the film, while pretending be real users, would only put people's backs up? And presumably someone was paid to set up this community.

LiveJournal are at it again. Go to Browsing Options and click the radio button for 'Beta Navigation'.

So many links! Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] lj_design has learned from the last debacle and disabled comments; there's a form to fill out for feedback instead.

Now it's not spork-out-your-own-eyes like the original verson of the profile page, but it's too bold and busy. Fortunately users can choose their own site scheme, so the mass outrage should be absent this time. It's good that they're trying to make the main page more user-friendly, but why can't we get simple things like a link to Tags on our profiles, or a 'default to text' option in the directory search?

Yay!

Just dashing in to say:

LiveJournal did listen to the feedback.

The beta for the info page now looks like this. It's not perfect, but it's a vast improvement on the previous version. Personally I like [livejournal.com profile] grrliz's mock-up, but they seem to be incorporating some features of it.
