Grrrrr SUP

No new Basic accounts can be created as of yesterday.

So, are we leaving LJ now or what? Where's everyone's backups? I'm catre on GJ and jediowl on JF, and am on IJ as thewhiteowl.

I mean, I don't want to leave LJ. I like it here. I have a perm account (until SUP decides to downgrade it to Plus). But if everyone else goes, there's nothing to stay for.

Cannot be bothered to watch this week's Torchwood in the iPlayer. Everyone's saying it's rubbish, so I may give it a miss.

Is anyone going? I'd be surprised, to be honest. If you're already a member, you can keep your basic account if you want. GJ isn't accepting new accounts and is, I think, basically dead. JF still has that whole invitation thing which is pretty annoying. And IJ - well it looks horrible and I don't like the whole insane asylums thing...

I haven't seen anyone say they're leaving. And to be honest, this seems less of an issue than some we've had before.

Yeah, well, I'm not going anywhere.

As for this week's TW, I liked it. I liked it much, much better than the Dead!Owen arc.

I actually thought this week's TW was ok. Plot was weak, but the atmospherics were good, and the characters had a quiet, contemplative quality I liked.

Eh, I doubt an exodus will ever REALLY happen unless the system completely falls to pieces. :p

Torchwood wasn't squeerific, but it was a decent episode.

Are people leaving LJ? I switched from a Basic to a Plus as soon as it became available, and then I finally bought a Paid. I like LJ. If people don't want ads, all they have to do is run Firefox and download Adblock Plus, so the browser automatically blocks ads like mine!

I haven't noticed anyone leaving LJ, though. It may slow down the influx of new people, but once they're here they might as well stay, right?

The problem I've got is that a lot of my friends aren't in fandom and don't really care about all this enough to move, which doesn't really give me that much impetus to leave LJ, however much SUP may seem to regard us as a lot of comfortably boiling frogs.

If people like you who I definitely want to stay in touch with are moving, I think my choice would be Journalfen if I could figure out a way of actually getting an account over there - the 'create account' page just gets me a 'we're not creating accounts' page, and I'm not going to the trouble of randomly spamming communities just to have five posts to point to so that I can take advantage of anon_no_more.

I never actually remember to use my GJ, and having actually *been* on the books of Avon and Somerset Mental Health, IJ and its stupid theme can bite me.

They're putting the heat up a little too fast for me I think, although they've not actually given me the activation energy to do anything useful yet, and if I do go it'll be to something self-hosted and I'll maintain the use of LJ to keep in touch with other people, my friends list is too fragmented for everyone to jump ship in the same direction.

I've thought about getting my own blog, but I really like the friendslock facility on LJ.

I thought this post (http://telesilla.livejournal.com/635997.html) of [livejournal.com profile] telesilla's made a good point, that people aren't going to migrate to where the technology's clunkier without an overwhelming incentive.

I quite agree.

One of the things that makes self-hosting more attractive to me is that I don't make locked posts. I'm not sure why blogging tools haven't adapted to include content-filtering like this -- all the ducks are pretty much there to be shot by now; maybe there's no pressure on the system because everyone who wants those features is with one of the LJ-alikes?

I have a wordpress.com blog which allows you to set posts to different passwords so that you can effectively filter content. The big difference is that it's not a friends list with mutual sharing.

Quotes a Form Lower Two play in about 1950:

I'm waiting to see what's going on with Tor's "Watch the Skies" project on Tor.Com. They say they're introducing a major new portal for fandom on the internet, with blogging, fiction, artwork, etc, and built-in social networking. That last could mean nearly anything, but if they play their cards right, they might end up filling the space lj is vacating as fandom's hectic and unofficial home on the web.

But really, the friends page is the thing. The reason I'm still avoiding facebook is because I'm not interested in a 'networking' site that doesn't aggregate my friends' content for me. If people have to come to my page to see my posts and I have to go to their page to see theirs, how exactly is that a 'network?' Sounds more like a webring with delusions of grandeur.

it might be worth it to drop Irene Gallo (the Tor art director) or the Nielsen Haydens a note. They actually use lj, so they might be considering it already.

I don't plan on going anywhere. I finally have learned how to use my lj account. the idea of coming up with a new one is a little overwelming.
