I know Saddam's regime was bad news, and that things are better for people now. But the coalition is pulling out in June. What happens then? How do you know any democracy the Americans set up is going to last? That Shi'ite cleric has far too much support for my liking. Look at the Marsh Arabs, down where the British forces are. Saddam persecuted them, drained their marshes, flooded their villages. The British are restoring the marshes, hiring contractors to build up sites for them to rebuild. But the sheik of the village said to reporters that if the Shi'ites in the north rose up, they would follow them, and attack the British soldiers who'd rebuilt their villages! Is it only the BBC that reports thiese things? I think it's very likely that when the coalition pulls out, there's going to be a Muslim theocracy set up along the lines of Saudi Arabia, under the Muslim law--where you can be beheaded for converting, and beaten for owning a cassette tape. Iraq's Christian population actually think that they'd be better of under (secular) Saddam than under that sort of regime. Yes, it may be a democracy, in the sense that the majority of the population are Muslims. But if 70% of America's population decided that that kind of thing was okay, would you be happy?
