owl: Part of the Mandlebrot Set, in blue (mandelbrot)
If you have a GreatestJournal or JournalFen account, could you post the id here, please?

I'm jediowl at JF and catre at GJ.
owl: Lanyon Building, Queen's University Belfast (qub)
[livejournal.com profile] ataniell93 has been posting about the Hogwarts houses. Now I am a Ravenclaw with a touch of Gryffindor (which makes me purplish-blue, a shade which causes me some synaesthesic distress as I see myself as green), and I was going, 'Check, check, spot on!' to Ravenclaw traits such as messiness, borrowing others' belongings non-maliciously and living in one's one universe inside one's head.

Then someone pointed out that Ravenclaws would enjoy jokes similar to, say, ones carried out at MIT. While I was laughing at these, I had a sudden realisation. If I don't go back into academia and stay there for the next 40 years, I had better get a job with a high concentration of fellow-geeks.
I miss [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 and my housemates, living in Belfast and learning new stuff,a social life, the university library (it's not even the physics. It's being able to go and look for information on fleet actions of the Napoleonic wars/mineralogy of asteroids/English witch trials and have a good chance of finding it. Guess the fandoms!).
But even more I miss being around flesh-and-blood geeks. People who get my jokes, who understand obsessiveness and that piles of paper on the floor are a perfectly good filing system, random interjections of,'But why is it like this...?' and the joy of usless knowledge. Also, most geeks are fannish or at least understand the fan mindset. I mightn't admit to my housemates that I write fanfiction, but at least I could have a good discussion of Harry Potter shipping or manifestations of the Hero's Journey.

It's the mindset I miss, not any particular aspect of it. Knowing other people are like me and I'm not as freaky as I might seem.

I am nerdier than 75% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:

Mid-Level Nerd. Wow, it takes a lot of hard nerdy practice to reach this level.

Seemed appropriate.
