Thanks to the sainted Patrick, I have a three-day weekend. Apparently they were celebrating it on Sandy Row as well; if we could get on board the holiday, perhaps we could move on next to Irish, and then we could get rid of the whole embarrassing Ulster-Scots thing.

The new LJ layout Vertigo has been released in beta; if you like Dystopia you might want to give it a try. I can in when Dystopia was the default, so it's sort of nostalgically familiar to me.

I had a prof go on a tear about Ulster Scots and how it's not a real language-- he got very snarky about it. It was pretty funny.

Hm. How do I find this Vertigo-in-beta? I'm still using Dystopia, because Horizon and XColibur annoy me in multiple ways, but I always suspect this means I can't find some of the new features.

Viewing Options. It was designed to be a vertical scheme that unlike Dystopia, is continuing to be updated.

It's a DIALECT of Scots, with demonstrable more or less close relationships to other dialects of Scots. Which does have a good case for being a language, actually.

And there are a small number of speakers of U-S, and a lot of them are Nationalist, which you wouldn't believe to hear the Ulster-Scots Society talking. It's not that I have anything against minority languages, it's just that the Ulster-Scots people are cringeworthy. It's so stupid to go, 'Well, that other lot have Irish, so we want a special language too!' And the the attempt at written version, complete with street signs, is hilarious: when the signs in a Loyalist area were changes to U-S, the inhabitants tore them down under the impression that they were in Irish.
