Seriously. Apparently it somehow reduces the likelihood of certain genetic abnormalities. I can't remember where it was exactly that I read this, but the article said something about the Jewish community and using that as evidence - something to do with shtetls (sp?) or something. It was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure it was bona fide...
