Numb3rs 5.05: Scan Man
Nov. 4th, 2008 10:42 pmIt's nice not to have to have the security clearance issue hanging over the plot. Talking of the plot, am totally confused about which boxes went where.
I thought the Charmita tiff came out of left field rather. Yeah, he said her method was wrong, but he's been much more arrogant and tactless about being right before.
I suppose it's realistic though; how often are fights over something totally silly? Theory: Amita is picking fights on purpose so that she can dress up in her pretty frock and *cough* make up with Charlie. Gets around that distraction problem he has. (And yeah, public corridor, Charmita. In my head Don walked past them on his way out and went AUGH MY EYES, GET A ROOM, KIDS. NO NOT HERE. ANYWHERE BUT HERE AUGH AUGH)
I know the three-way mathsvision was meant to symbolise the geek squad back in harmony with each other, but it came across like they were giving a presentation. If they'd really been getting the same idea together/collaboratively, they'd have been shouting and talking over each other, instead of finishing everyone else's sentences so neatly.
Last week Catch Me If You Can, this week Rain Man. Even the title is similar. How awesome is David knowing what to do to make Emerson comfortable? And Charlie's protective sort of attitude is sweet. I was highly amused by Don's explosion of amusement at Charlie's comment, "mathematical genius coupled with diminished social skills", which also kind of supports my theory that Charlie is as well socialised as he is because of years of concentrated effort from his entire family.
Nikki and Liz are good teamed up, oh yeah. And I think we just about passed the Bechdel test this episode. Don was mentioned, but not as the focus of the conversation. Liz, stop talking about transferring, please. Unless your transfer takes the whole season to come through, we all know you're a regular at the minute.
I liked that Don actually managed to talk to Bradford (after insisting that everything was fine first, of course. He's still Don.) Also that the relationship with Robin is evidently still on. Although it wouldn't have killed Bradford to refer to her by her name instead of "hot prosecutor". What, she's nothing but her body and her job? And "hot prosecutor" is an Eppes family joke (how many prosecutors has Don dated now?), so how come Bradford knows about it? But poor Don. I'm glad we're getting angsty!thoughtful!Don instead of DonnieDarko this time.
I just wanted to hug him so many times through that episode. When the SWAT guy died and Don looked so completely gutted, and when he was talking to Bradford, and when he was in the warehouse and said the line about "And don't forget my brother." And his face when he was looking up at the synagogue. Oh, Donnie. I don't think that that was out of character for him; he's always been the one who brings up religion and Judaism. Charlie, now that would be a surprise. I remember reading an interview somewhere with Rob Morrow saying that he wished they would do something about the Eppeses being Jewish. Much better idea than all the relationships, there. Could work out all right.

Date: 2008-11-04 11:54 pm (UTC)Some of my fave moments in the episode there :)
And his face when he was looking up at the synagogue. Oh, Donnie.
I thought that was a great place to take the character and Rob Morrow just nailed it. I'm really excited to see where they go with that this season.
We had yet again the "missing character with no explanation" syndrome :( Last week at least they explained Nicki being missing but no mention of where the heck Colby was during this episode.
All in all it was a strong episode and my fave from this season.

Date: 2008-11-05 12:11 am (UTC)That final scene, with Don looking up at the doors with that hopeful/uncertain expression, and then giving this little nod as the music rose...aw, Don. Well done, Rob. And yeah, I think this storyline suits Don.

Date: 2008-11-05 12:12 am (UTC)I didn't mind that--I figured that either Don or Charlie mentioned the family joke around Bradford, and that Bradford was deliberately using a term that Don would understand as jokingly serious (you know what i mean, right? serious but not stated that way).
So, so pleased with the way Don's arc is going. Synagogue ftw!

Date: 2008-11-05 12:39 am (UTC)Yeah, I think this storyline fits Don very well (Now do it well, writers!) I think Rob will do it well; I believe it's something he wanted to do with the character. That scene standing outside the synagogue made me choke up a little.
