The obligatory Ron-loving post

owlI love Ron. I also love Harry and Hermione, and I love their triad. I know that you can read a book while disliking one of the characters, but Ron is a pretty large presence in the books. It must get very tedious to think all the time 'Here comes Ron again, the stupid git...' on every half-page. I don't hate any of the characters but Umbridge and Voldemort, though I find Hagrid and his misadventures tedious.
I've never met these 'morons' that think the books are called Ronald Weasley and the... I believe they're straw men. I don't know that anyone thinks Ron is a better person/character/hero than Harry; they both have their flaws and their strengths. Better for Hermione maybe, given that Harry isn't attracted to her, shows zero interest and tends to find her solo company less than inspiring, while Ron and Hermione show signs of interest in each other (I think the 'you're as bad [clueless at asking girls out] as Ron--oh, no you're not comment is particularly telling). But that's a minor side issue to the main plot, and Ron's and Hermione's function as Harry's friends and support in his journey to defeat Voldemort.
I see the characters as real persons. I feel I know them. Ron can be immature at times, he's hot-tempered, he goes into 15-year-old mode, but then Hermione is neurotic, interferes in other people's business and can be alarmingly self-righteous, and Harry is self-absorbed, currently in ALLCAPS ANGST mode, and has just a touch of arrogance (only I can save the world and everyone!). But if they were all perfect Mary-Sue types, who would want to read about them?

ETA: I see this has turned out to be Trio-defence rather than Ron-defence per se. It seems to be my King Charles' head!

Date: 2004-07-31 03:27 am (UTC)And it's imperfections of the characters that makes them so attractive IMO. Normal human fallibilities that give us something and someone we can relate to.
Like Luke, Han and Leia, Harry, Ron and Hermione are greater together than apart.
