That Star Wars fic
Jul. 31st, 2004 06:15 pmSome of you remember that I'm currently writing a Han/Leia fic set in the ESB/RotJ period. Very slowly.
At the minute my creativity seems to be low, so I've printed out the scripts of bits that I think are important and retelling them as prose in Leia's PoV. I think some of them have to be there to act as an anchor and bookmark for where the scenes are relative to canon. A couple of questions:
My brain seems to have melted.
Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to JKR and Harry Potter!!

Date: 2004-07-31 05:47 pm (UTC)I'm not partial to retold canon, as in "This is what was going through character X's head in this scene"--unless it sets the stage for an original scene. Like, it says, "Okay, this is where we left our heroes, and now this is where they're going." Basically, when folks fic a scene just to put thoughts in the characters' heads, it's the same thing as doing one of those picture captioning things. Cute, but what's the point?

Date: 2004-07-31 06:09 pm (UTC)I'm not particularly a fan, mostly since when I'm watching the movie, I try on my own to imagine what the character's thinking. Plus, one of my favorite things about movies is body language, a "retelling" canon can't include that, so it's almost like I can't read retellings... bah. I'm weird, I know. But I more or less already have my own idea as to the goings-on of the scene, you know?
What do you think Vader said to Leia after the door of the dining hall closed on Our Heroes in Cloud City?
I have no idea, but that's one of my favorite "missing moments" to read about. I love the fics where they actually sit down and have breakfast, where Han's flinging insults at Vader and Vader's all, "So, Princess, I see your taste is great in everything but men," lol. All in all, I didn't really think Vader explained/divulged that much to them, because of the scene with Han, Leia, Lando, and Chewie in the cell later on--they seemed overall surprised by Vader's plans.
Good luck with your fic! :D

Date: 2004-07-31 06:10 pm (UTC)As for what Vader told Leia...I don't know, but I suspect that each got a faint inkling of their connection to each other, which is a possible reason why Vader was so easily able to pick it out of Luke's mind on the Death Star and why Leia didn't keel over from shock when Luke told her on the forest moon.

Date: 2004-07-31 10:07 pm (UTC)As for your questions:
What is your tolerance to retold canon scenes? What proportion of rehashed to original could you stand?
Personally, I don't mind retold canon scenes at all. Mostly, I enjoy them, in particular when they are retold from the perspective of one character or another, and it's an important element that grounds a fic in canon (if that is the plan). And when it comes to H/L scenes from ESB - well, I love those, so no limit really. ;)
What do you think Vader said to Leia after the door of the dining hall closed on Our Heroes in Cloud City?
Well, I always thought Vader was a pretty pragmatic, doing-rather-than-talking kinda guy, who would only talk if it served a purpose (like convincing Luke that the Dark Side is the way forward) so I imagine he didn't say an awful lot to her. Maybe taunted her a little about meeting again finally, before giving orders to have them taken away to be tortured and stuff. Just my two cents...

Date: 2004-08-02 12:41 pm (UTC)I don't mind them, as long as it's well-written and it tells me something I didn't already know. If you are using it to tell what's going on in someone's head, I think it's okay. Also, if you are worried about this, you could write it in order to get in character. You can always cut it later if you feel it's not needed.
What do you think Vader said to Leia after the door of the dining hall closed on Our Heroes in Cloud City?
That scene has always given me the creeps; I think it's the way the door closes and we don't know what happened. The style of it reminds me of the way the torture droid goes after Leia in ANH, and the door closes.
