Predictions on OWLs
Aug. 31st, 2004 06:01 pmAs it's the time of year exam results come out, I thought I would have a go at presicting what out favourite trio is going to get in that OWL letter.
Hermione, of course, will be wanting all Os, and will be very disappointed to get any Es. Her Astronomy practical may trip her up, unless, being Hermione, she managed to get it all done before the unlawful arrests started.
Now Harry and Ron throughout the books are put on the same level as far as lessons are concerned. Harry of course is unusually good at DADA, while Ron seems to do slightly better in Potions. The both strike me as the kind of medium-bright boy who in the Muggle world would get a range of As, Bs and Cs in their GSCEs, with perhaps an A* or two in the subjects they really shone at.GSCEs have nine grades to the OWLs' five (or six if you include Troll), so that would probably map on to Os, Es and As, although naturally we know less about how ron did than Harry.
Harry seemed to do pretty well in Charms, Herbology and Transfiguration, but Ron's probably going to get a lower mark due to his mushroom. In DADA, Harry, Rona nd Hermione will probably all get Os, along with the rest of the DA who were sitting OWLs.Care of Magical Creatures seemed another good sound mark for Harry, and Potions went very well for him. I think both Neville's and Ron's marks may surprise in Potions, but I'm not sure Harry got the O he needed to be an Auror.
Divination and History of Magic will be As or Ps, although Divination is *cough* hard to predict considering its motto seems to be 'make it up' for the teacher as well as the pupils. Everyone was distracted during the Astronomy practical, so the markers may have taken that into account. In the O-level system, a fixed percentage of candidates were given each grade, so if the OWLs work that way it won't matter that everyone lost time. I'm not sure they do work that way.
And what about next year? That depends if JKR is basing NEWTs on A-levels or the Scottish Highers. I've seen people saying (or ficcing) the trio are going to study anything up to ten subjects. A-levels usually come in the 2-5 range, with Highers being more subjects in less depth. I would imagine Charms to be compulsory even at NEWT level, and if DADA isn't it would seem sensible in the current climate. Harry needs Charms, DADA, Transfiguration and Potions to be an Auror, so I'd say those would be his subjects, with Potions dependent on his OWL grade. Ron will probably be doing more or less the same as he's done so far, and Hermione, of course, will be doing more work than anyone else in the school. How many NEWTs that translates to, I have no idea.
