The Long Game
May. 9th, 2005 05:29 pmFirst, why 'The Long Game'? Me stoopid.
I would like to inform whoever wrote that episode: There are a type of DW viewers who aren't just watching because their date stood them up and there's nothing else to do. These viewers schedule their social lives around the programme time, and buy all the DVDs at £15 a shot. They're usually highly intelligent, slightly obsessive and collect information for its own sake. They are known as geeks. Thank you for implying that smart people are out for what they can get and are unworthy to be compared with Essex girls with no A levels.
The storyline this week made the Doctor look stupid (why did he give Adam unlimited credit? Asking for trouble. As for not changing time, just park the anachronistic technology in the living room, why don't you?) not to mention petty, and Rose look overly perfect. Knocking down straw characters to make another look good in comparison is Mary-Sue level writing. Still, it looks like Rose is riding for a fall, and that this episode was a set-up for Father's Day (I'm thinking of the 'another stupid ape' line), which is making my brain hurt with time paradoxes before I've even seen it.
Also, the Doctor/Rose subtext? Is threatening to break the surface into text. We get it. Stop acting like Ron and Hermione. This episode could be interpreted as the Doctor was jealous of Adam and got rid of him on purpose. Jealous Doctor=wrong. Subtle is good.Same with the political satire. Subtle.. AoL/WW3 was enough. Every episode doesn't have to have a hidden meaning.
Things I liked.
The Doctor giving Rose the info to wind up Adam at the beginning. Nine is such a mischief, I love it!
Adam fainting. Hilarious. And Rose disowning him as her boyfriend.
The Doctor snogging random strangers on foreign holidays. Asexual Doctor, hah! My theory is that the writers read
The two future women, especially the black one whose name I have forgotten. Melting the alien-blob-with-teeth because she hadn't been promoted, classic.
The whole set-up with Floor 500 and the ice and the bodies. So spooky, when Suki comes up at first.
The beef-flavoured Slush Puppy.
The Bad Wolf channel. Gotcha!
'Fine cuisine, good manners.' And everyone is shoving to get at the 20000 equivalent of McDonald's.

Date: 2005-05-09 05:56 pm (UTC)The bad stuff in this ep wasn't enough to thoroughly distract me from my DW love, though I think anything would've been a bit of a letdown after Dalek. We'll see what happens in Father's Day. I think you're right: They're setting Rose up to fall from the Doctor's pedestal... hard. No one is that perfect, no matter if the Doctor says he only keeps the best.
