I have been plodding with my writing lately for some reason, but I started typing up a H/L fic I wrote a long time ago, one whihc I thought needed a great deal of revision to make it ready to post, but so far it's been beter than I thought. It only takes a few word changes, removing the cringeworthy bits. And when I write new bits, it works well. The words all flow. Mind you, I haven't got to the bit with the plot in it yet. There were a few boggy patches, as I remember.
Don't you hate editing? I mean editing as in, scenes that end up on the cutting room floor. This piece of writing you expended such effort on is too long, or too embarrassing, or unnecessary to the plot, or just doesn't work, and you have to throw it away. It's my least favourite part of writing.

I'm with you on editing being a pain sometimes. Fixing little things like grammar or syntax can feel cleansing sometimes-- like "I'm glad my writing has improved since I wrote this," or even just "Now that looks a lot better," but cutting things can be hard.

The worst is when you really like the scene and there's nothing really wrong with it, except that it slows the story down unnecessarily, doesn't fit in with the POV, isn't really relevant, etc. It's that whole "kill your babies" thing... very sad.

yeah, that's why directors like DVDs so much.

I wonder if we could do "DVD releases" of fanfic... post the entire story, and then put up some of the stuff you cut out or do commentary or something.

I suppose that'd be kinda pretentious, though, unless there were readers who really wanted to see it.

Isn't it wonderful to revisit a piece and go "wait, this doesn't suck as much as it did the last time I read it?" I had a SW piece I'd been trying to rewrite because I thought the first one was so horrible, but then I re-read it and thought "Nope, not that bad, just needs tweaking."

Yay for getting back into the writing groove! I'm hoping after I finish correcting papers, my muse will return and she and I will talk muchly about all matters fictional.
