The Lazarus Experiment
May. 5th, 2007 08:39 pmI liked this one!
Poor Martha wasn't expecting her bedroom, was she?
Aw, it's all awkward:
'Well...bye, then, Martha'
'Yeah, it was good, thanks'
'So, I suppose I'll be off then'
'Yeah, bye, try not to get into trouble'
'Right. Umm...so...bye?'
'No, you hang up.'
'No, you do it.'
And then his double-take as he realises that something is Up. But he came back for Martha really.
The Doctor's the plus one this time! Hee! Martha looks very good in that dress.
I liked Tish's "soap" line. But then when Lazarus rejuved, she was all up for taking walks on the roof with him.
Okay, changing the genotype in an adult human isn't going to change the phenotype (that fast, anyway). That's twice in two episodes. And sonic waves??? Let's not even get into who split the atom...."Cockroft and Walton" not snappy enough for the scriptwriters?
Lazarus and his (?)wife were a couple of nasty pieces of work. The disintegrated corpses were enough to give kids nightmares, and I'm not sure about myself.
First the psychic paper, now the sonic screwdriver. All she's got to do now is fly the TARDIS *g* She was in great form this week, evacuating bystanders, doing her doctor stuff with her brother, going back in after the Doctor, and running very fast in high heels. The Doctor's right, she's a star.
Heh, all the mothers slap him. Well, she is acting a bit shifty and doing unspecified Stuff with this nameless Doctor (like hiding in cupboards while he admires her shoes, lol).
The Doctor back in his dinner jacket (Doctor. The Doctor) and black Converses (which I happen to be wearing in a size 6 right now :) ). But he said something bad always happens when he wears it, and we've only seen him do it in Pete's world, so...unrecorded adventures?
Chemistry lab! I like it when things go boom. My class nearly did one of those leave-the-gas-taps-on, bang things once.
I knew that it wasn't all over when they were loading Lazarus into the ambulance. And that he'd go for the cathedral because he sheltered there from the Blitz. That helped give a bit of insight into his motives. That's two episodes in a row with the 'life at all costs theme'. Hmm.
There were some great visuals in those interior shots too. I loved the overhead one with Lazarus huddling in front of the altar and the Doctor standing over him (DT is tall, isn't he?)
I loved the Doctor's bit about being old and tired, and no human beings being ordinary. And when he was closing Lazarus's eyes and he changed back to the old man. And so many Eliot references.
So the Doctor can play the organ. I can just see him fanboying Beethoven. And, lol, I just got the joke: when Martha says the line about playing Beethoven loudly, the Doctor's gone deaf.
I don't see how the noise of the organ could have killed Lazarus, unless it just annoyed him so much that he fell? (It nearly happened to Martha after all). Bit of a risky plan, if so. But the girls pulled off the bait role really well. I like Tish, too.
So Mr Saxon is like this year's Torchwood: he gets mentioned a lot and he doesn't like the Doctor at all.
Annd it's back to that 'no, you you go' routine. I was hoping for the Doctor to do the asking, instead of just going, 'ok', but at least Martha stuck up for herself and he did acknowledge that she'd never been just a passenger. But he still didn't give her a chance to pack some clean underwear and a sensible pair of running shoes!
The trailer: Jack's back! I wonder if he'll have his Doctor Who or Torchwood personality. The 'did someone just kiss me'? line sounded more like the former, but it'll be weird to see him out of Torchwood. I wonder if he'll go back to it. He does seem to be doing the Sleeping Beauty thing a lot lately, doesn't he?
Ooooh oooh ooooh it's Sam Tyler! Perhaps Gene is a secret Time Lord and that's how he keeps ending up with DIs from the 21st century? And why does the creepy guy need a Time Lord, and how does he know about them in the first place?
Is the Doctor wearing the orange spacesuit from Satan Pit again? Is he back in the same place, or has the Beeb blown the budget on special effects and left none for new costumes? And, speaking of costumes, don't tell me that that's Martha's maroon strappy top again. She's already wore it for 4 episodes, give it a rest.

Never mind that, Rutherford splitting the atom...!

Date: 2007-05-05 09:14 pm (UTC)I suppose it depends what exactly they mean by 'split the atom': Rutherford did produce the first artificial disintegration of a nucleus, by firing alphas at n2, 1919, but Cockroft and Walton had the particle accelerator, didn't they?
Claim to fame: Ernest Walton went to my grammar school, briefly.

Date: 2007-05-05 09:00 pm (UTC)When she introduced him to her mother, I was hoping she'd say "Uh... Doctor Smith" instead of just "just The Doctor," because I liked how she called him Smith in the Shakespeare ep even after she knew that wasn't his name. But that's just me.
And good on Martha for standing up for herself. Next step: find a boy who's not The Doctor so that we can be done with the silly 'unrequited love' business.
