Numb3rs 5.09: Conspiracy Theory
Dec. 9th, 2008 10:08 pmThe meta in this was a little recursive, I'm starting to think. So the case itself wasn't a conspiracy, but the Geek Squad B-plot to change the Hollywood sign was, and there is something up with Howard Hughes. Don thinks he's CIA, and how cool was that "Who do I send the bill for the window to, Langley?" Don snarking at overbearing authority without turning into Gitmo!Don, have to like it.
I loved Liz's hopeful "Imagine..." and the Charlievision with the penguins and the parka. And Liz giving helpful hints as to how to go about the prank, and snarking about the conspiracy nut. Once again, she is much better as a character now she's not going out with Don.
Do my eyes deceive me, or is Charlie running Ubuntu on his desktop?
Rosencrantz and Guildernstern and the conspiracy nut were hilarious. Loved their simultaneous "Shut up!" in the firefight. And Alan pulling out his little visual aid (you can see where Charlie gets it from) and getting them to stop arguing. Hmm, wonder if that method worked on Don and Charlie in years gone by.
I liked David analysing the bomb at the start and getting Colby and the other agents out in time. Continuity for the win. And the explosions were pretty cool with everyone running and Don throwing his arm over his head, and talking to Liz in the van with his face all smudged.
Charmita are once again doing that thing where they have stupid little fights, apparently for the sole purpose of making up adorkably by the end of the episode.
"I can't believe Amita believes in conspiracy theories."
Charles Edward Eppes, you howling hypocrite! Has it escaped your notice that you, the person you are complaining about, and the person you are complaining to, are all currently involved in a, yes, CONSPIRACY to change the HOLLYWOOD sign to CAL SCI? Therefore, at least one conspiracy provably exists, therefore conspiracies cannot be ruled out as a priori impossible.I wish they wouldn't do that thing where they assign Amita the opposite opinion to Charlie just to cause tension, forgetting that she's a scientist too. Most conspiracy theories fall down under Occam's razor, but as Amita and Larry point out, there have been instances of conspiracies in the past. Generally they get uncovered when the conspirators are inept or betray each other, or the whole thing simply collapses under its own weight.
"You got arrested?"
Again, Charlie, pot, kettle, black. Surely you haven't forgotten the whole storyline with your clearance already? Plus, I bet your parents have pot convictions too. Alan certainly seemed amused by Amita's little story.
"Why can't you tell me everything?"
Oh, Charlie. Hello, social skills FAIL, we haven't seen you for, oh, three episodes at least. I know that Charlie cannot help sharing whatever is in his curly genius head with anyone within shouting distance, but that doesn't mean that Amita is the same. It's probably a Geek Social Fallacy of some kind. Actually, she's pretty FAILy as well with the just handing over the diary. It's not as if she's even intentionally hidden the arrest story from him. Charlie did realise that he couldn't read it, and with anyone else you could count on that, which would make the diary a bluff or a gesture, but I wouldn't have been a hundred percent certain that Charlie wouldn't. Also, if she's been keeping that since since she was 13, either that's only the last few months, or it's very heavily edited.
Also, Charlie, the reason you are always apologising is because Amita is an intelligent woman, and therefore right most of the time :) You, on the other hand, are merely a very intelligent young man, and that just doesn't cut it.
I'm a little worried about Don/Robin. They've made up by the end of the episode as well, but it's a big thing not to agree on, and if Don's religion becomes more important to him, it's only going to get worse. I felt bad for them when they tried for their usual banter and failed (the Fiddler on the Roof comment), but by the end they were back on form, with Don's "The rabbi's going to kick his ass, I like the guy in his corner", and thinking they were hockey tickets before he looked.
The prank was great. I loved the whole palaver with the briefing the students, and the walk-talkies, and how the supposed adults were all in on it. Charlie and Amita were adorable mock-squabbling over the camera (and go Amita for reminding him about his own record, at last), and laughing and kissing, and looking at each other instead of the sign. Poor Larry looking out into the middle distance as Charlie and Amita got all kissy-face behind him. Never mind, if Megan had been there she'd only have had to arrest the lot of you.
