After 14 years, the updated Psalters have been published, and yesterday we sang out of them for the first time. I think I like them. There's no point in letting sentiment get in the way of accurate translation, and anyway most of the favourite psalms are there in the old version as well as the new translation. With all these B and C versions, we're going to have to get new letters for the board.

In fact, pretty much everything that was in the old one is in the new one, bar some tunes that we never used anyway. We have a new selection of tunes, mostly the late Victorian sort that missed us before, as well as some from the American psalter. [livejournal.com profile] elerrina_amanya says that the RPs have finally updated to the tunes the Presbyterians were using 150 years ago! But I say that the sort of tunes they write nowadays mostly don't have a metre, a necessary thing for the metrical psalms. And anything written for praise band, piano, and full drum kit are bound not to work a cappella.

One bad thing about it from the precenting point of view is that it now only says the metre at the head of each psalm, rather than suggestions for tunes. Actually that's probably to stop us singing the same three tunes all the time! And we still have the metrical, alphabetical and classified indexes (indices?) of tunes. Stroudwater is still there too, aka My Mother's Least Favourite Tune Of All Time.
