it's actually L337, or L33T. pronounced 'LEET.'

l33t-speak used to be a clever, witty hacker code, but as internet access became more redily available, scriptkiddies, or hackers that use scripts to break into people's systems rather than relying on any actual hacking skills, began using it. Real hackers stoped using it, because it turned into a poser thing.

Then geeks started using it to make fun of scriptkiddies, and it became a geek language.

It relies on substituting letters with numbers or other letters that look like them. Woot becomes w00t, leet becomes l33t, and so on.

e becomes 3
o becomes 0
t (sometimes) becomes 7
y becomes j
-ck (as in Hacker or rocks) becomes -xors (Haxors, roxors).

Take a word, spell it phonetically, then start substituting things. that's l33t speak.
