You're The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe!

by C.S. Lewis

You were just looking for some decent clothes when everything changed
quite dramatically. For the better or for the worse, it is still hard to tell. Now it
seems like winter will never end and you feel cursed. Soon there will be an epic
struggle between two forces in your life and you are very concerned about a betrayal
that could turn the balance. If this makes it sound like you're re-enacting Christian
theological events, that may or may not be coincidence. When in doubt, put your trust
in zoo animals.

Take ten people from your friends list who you don't know in RL (and haven't seen a lot of pictures of), including the person you're snagging from, and describe the person as you see him or her in your mind.

[livejournal.com profile] fernwithy is a tall woman with long straight dark hair, and glasses, oddly. She looks very intelligent.

[livejournal.com profile] sunshyndaisies is short and slim, long black hair and black eyes, oval face.

[livejournal.com profile] ajhalluk has blonde hair in a French roll, smartly dressed, of medium height, with grey eyes.

[livejournal.com profile] swirlycurlzz has bobbed black hair, a round face and is of medium height. She's Asian. (okay, I knew that before :) )

[livejournal.com profile] ladyaeryn has light brown hair, a little curly, and blue eyes. She's average height or a little less, but curvy. She wears glasses too. (Okay, I'm noticing a correlation between PT fans and glasses here...)

[livejournal.com profile] ladylisse has short brown hair, tan skin and brown eyes. She's tall and rather thin.

[livejournal.com profile] emmi_girl has dark blonde hair and grey eyes. She's not very tall, of similar build to [livejournal.com profile] ladyaeryn. Her desktop has Luke Skywalker on it (that was a stretch,not...)

[livejournal.com profile] connielane has dark red hair, in those tight little curls, and blue or green eyes. She carries an umbrella.

[livejournal.com profile] irinaauthor has brown hair, blue eyes, a C-cup, and wears snazzy boots.

[livejournal.com profile] sue_parsons looks kind of like my mammy. :) Short, short dark hair, brown eyes, nice to hug.

Now you all have to comment and tell me if I have it right!

Now, on to some ranting.
I hear that Zahn's latest book has Luke (sorry, that Luke-clone that inhabits the EU) saying that if Mara rejoined the Empire, he'd go with her. Can I just say 'Whaaaaaaaattt?'
Luke hated the Empire right from the start, when he was still on Tatooine. Do you think he'd be any more inclined to join it once they'd killed his adoptive parents, his mentor, his childhood best friend, blown up his sister's planet and family, frozen his future brother-in-law in carbonite, attempted to turn him to the Dark side not to mention the whole Anakin/Vader complexity?
Is there any part of Luke's character that Zahn won't sacrifice to make his Mary Sue look good?

A quotation from Mark Hamill comes to mind:

Do you read the Star Wars novels?

No. Part of it is that you want a clean break, especially since you have no input. It would be hard for me. I made a conscious decision that, now that I'm no longer involved, I don't want to torture myself in a way by saying "Luke wouldn't do that!", if that was the case.

Very, very smart. I only wish I were that clever...

Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] snarkel!

Hee! I actually do look sort of Weasley like. I have very pale skin and freckles, and my hair is sort of a brownish/red. It's naturally sort of a dark blonde/light brown color but I've been coloring it for years (before I got into HP actually so it wasn't a Weasley reason for the dye ... although I do like the connection now *grins* ... ) so most people think the brownish/red is my natural color.

I tend to associate people with their user icons too. One of the girls I met at Nimbus I actually had this odd feeling of surprise that she didn't look like Elijah Wood, even though I KNEW she couldn't possibly look like Frodo. LOL!!

It's not THE Empire, aka the Imperial Remenant, but the Empire of the Hand. It's a handful of Imperials (Baron Fel and some others) who followed Thrawn into the Unknown Regions, and a lot of Chiss. In the book, one of them actually describes it as more of a confederacy than a true Empire. They only a bit of contact with the 'real' Imperials.

I agree it was a little much, but context is everything.

Oh, and yes, Zahn loves gratifying his Mary Gary Sue, Thrawn. There were a LOT of eye rolling moments in Survivor's Quest for me, but most of them involved him, not Mara. Which kinda surprised me.

...well the motion has been carried: WTF????

I pretty much ignore most of the post-trilogy EU (well most of the EU in general). I mean between Mara, the Vong, the flying jedi, and the ripping the lines from LotR (book, not movie. The scen was just too similar to write off), I was just like "whatever."

*laughs* Am short, kinda pale unless you catch me on the beach in July, and have been told I look like a Gibson girl. I do have short brown hair, though. And the eyes are kinda right, 'cause I have color-changing Mary Sue eyes. I swear. :P

Dang. Now I wanna post a picture.

How wonderful! How clever of you to hit on the Platonic ideal of my appearance!

Unfortunately, the version that gets projected onto the cave wall has long dark-brown but rapidly greying hair (loose on my shoulders because gravity and natural ineptitude defy the French pleat which is my preference [well-spotted!] except on the rare occasions when I choose to pay a hairdresser to do the job properly. Also my eyes are dark brown [my colouring could well come from my father, but it and my nose are usually attributed back via my mother to my great-great grandmother, who produced a daughter without benefit of clergy while working as a cook in Didsbury in the 1850s and lived on into the 20th century still with a pension from the family for whom she had cooked] and I am 5ft 6 which is on the taller side of average. Also, my Platonic ideal self remembers to iron more often than the one who operates this side of the cave.

*blinks again*

My WTF???!!!! joins the chorus, that goes with out saying. It stands to reason that Zahn is such a reviosionist, propping up his creations at the expense of canon, 25+ year old canon at that.

*closes eyes*

Thank all that's holy, I do not read the (P)EU. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

See Zahn.

See Zahn fry.

See Zahn fry in the pits of hell for his character assassination.

The end.

You can add something else to that, so it would go like this:

See Zahn.

See Zahn fry.

See Zahn fry in the pits of hell for his character assassination.

See fans.

See fans dance.

See fans dance for joy because characters are normal again.

The end.

:D

That definitely soothes the soul. :)

Sadly Zahn is only the beginning. A HUGE step, but the real question is how many EU authors would have to meet the same fate before the GFFA was right again? ;)

IMO, he's the worst of the lot, because he takes his creations far too seriously. He started the trend when he wrote Heir to the Empire and the other authors kept going, perpetuating his little message, albeit with their own hack creations.

Snuff out Zahn, you have the foundation damaged. Shortly after that, the other authors follow suit, and the whole idiocy that is the EU crumbles to dust, and we can stomp on said dust to our canonist heart's content (well, at least mine).

I don't think Mara would ask him to do that. In the book she's struggling with the idea of the orderly process of an Empire appealing to her over the squabbles of the New Republic, but even Zahn's Mara can't justify taking her husband away from his family and the government he and his family helped to create. (NJO Mara might be another story.)

On the other hand, Luke offered: Mara didn't ask him to make that choice, and she'd already decided not to go. He offered. And Luke's always been, to steal from Spike, love's bitch. (Just like his Daddy. Aww.)

I'm not sure where in the EU it is, but there's a big "You shall not pass" scene with a bridge and a bunch of vong trying to get through a doorway past this one jedi to Anakin, I believe. and it was just like "wow, hi Gandalf."

Ah yeah! Ganner - "None shall pass!" I actually liked that scene because of the LOTR reference (I saw it more as an homage rather than a ripoff). YMMV, or course.

I also remember getting the monty python image, and I just started giggling. Which was bad because it was supposed to be serious. The author just lost me.

JMHO, YMMV.

From: [identity profile] ravenclaw-devi.livejournal.com
Yeah, that makes a difference.

To offer my perspective on it:

On the other hand, Luke offered: Mara didn't ask him to make that choice, and she'd already decided not to go. He offered.

That's the point. When we look at what was actually done by the two of them, it's Mara who followed her husband wherever he went and adapted to his (Jedi) lifestyle. I mean, it's often said that Mara is such a controlling wife and Luke is "whipped", but it was Mara who gave up her old lifestyle to follow her husband's, not the other way 'round. She never expected (much less asked) him to give up his life and join Karrde's organization or whatever she was working for.

And Luke, being the good, loving man he is, doesn't just take it for granted that his wife follows his life choices, he reminds her that to follow her choice is also an option. Because they have a relationship where there's true parity, where there's love, where the other is appreciated. (Note that I'm only talking about Zahn's version of L/M here; I'm leaving out the NJO because pretty much all characters got distorted therein.)

I've been in a relationship where it was taken for granted (by him) that his family, his lifestyle, his everything came first, and I was the one who was to adapt to his life, not the other way 'round. And all the while, I had to listen to his spiel about how he was making such a big sacrifice by accepting me into his life! When he wanted to change nothing and just put me into his life like an additional piece of furniture. :-( As coincidence would have it, I read VOTF shortly after going through that, and I came to the conclusion that I'd much rather have a guy like Luke (and I think I've found him, but that's another point). So because of that, I feel strongly about the whole thing, which is why I pitched in, even though I haven't gotten around to reading SQ yet (which means I can only go by what others have said about it, so please take everything I say with the mandatory grain of salt for the moment, 'kay?)

Good points. :D The whole factoid of Mara choosing to follow Luke has been largely ignored and/or underestimated.
