Let's go on strike
Mar. 17th, 2008 09:03 pmONE DAY CONTENT STRIKE
For one day, Friday, March 21, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.
SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site.
So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT, let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT.
This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase.
Full information at The Fox's Den.
SPREAD THE WORD!
First they do away with Basic accounts for new users, then they censor fanfiction from the "popular interests" page. Ever feel a little squeezed?

MATCH IT FOR PRATCHETT
Today, it was announced that Terry Pratchett has donated half a million pounds to Alzheimer's research. Hearing that, it occurred to me that if half a million of us all donated a pound to Alzheimer's research, we could match his donation and make it an even million.
So whaddaya say, guys? It's a pound. That's about 2 bucks US dollars, give or take a couple of (US) pennies. You can spare that much. Go here and make your donation. Tell them it's in honour of Terry Pratchett.
Let's do it!

Oh, SUP, just stop now, please
Mar. 13th, 2008 11:07 pmGrrrrr SUP
No new Basic accounts can be created as of yesterday.
So, are we leaving LJ now or what? Where's everyone's backups? I'm catre on GJ and jediowl on JF, and am on IJ as thewhiteowl.
I mean, I don't want to leave LJ. I like it here. I have a perm account (until SUP decides to downgrade it to Plus). But if everyone else goes, there's nothing to stay for.
Cannot be bothered to watch this week's Torchwood in the iPlayer. Everyone's saying it's rubbish, so I may give it a miss.

Doctor Who does it again
Mar. 11th, 2008 10:32 pmSo. Latest cracked-out speculation for DW S4.
DO NOT WANT. I mean, what's the point? Sadly, I suspect Team Cardiff may think this the best concept since sliced bread.

Building go CRASH
Mar. 10th, 2008 07:12 pmEeek. Building falls down in Victoria Street. No, it didn't blow down; the storm hasn't really hit here yet; apparently it DED OF CONCREET.
I am completely TEH FAILZ at ordering birthday presents.
elerrina_amanya likes to be surprised. I'm the opposite, and in fact spent some time last weekend going 'Tell me what you bought me!' Still. Ordering the present to the house with the letterbox would be a good idea, eejit.

Fic rec for TW
Mar. 8th, 2008 10:50 pmLOLarious (literally) Torchwood fic.
"Is that a talking cat?" Jack asked, off in the distance.
"It does appear to be," Ianto said carefully. The cat leapt from his shoulder to Tosh's desk. The others gathered round slowly.
"I HAS A HOOMANS," the cat continued.

So.
Ian Paisley is giving up leadership of the DUP.
It's not like I liked the man. And I think the DUP sold out. Nevertheless. It's like getting up in the morning and seeing that Cave Hill has shifted into the lough in the night.

A maths-y post
Mar. 4th, 2008 11:21 pmI have returned to the intarwebz,
elerrina_amanya having finished the Project of Doooom this morning. She woke me up at ten to midnight last night to proofread it, so I was sitting in bed with the laptop on my duvet going "Binomials...zzzz....Pascal's Triangle...oh, yeah, remember that...."
She's just said, "Now I've finished with the numbers, let's have some Numb3rs." (which is on ITV3 on Mondays for us unfortunate right-pondians, about a million years after the Americans get it. Incidentally, if the government wants to stop illegal downloading, they should try working on the gap between American films/TV being shown in America and being shown here. Of course people are more likely to get something illegally if there's no way they can get it legally!)
BTW, it's a crime drama WITH MATHS if you've never run across it. We've been watching it a good bit lately. I'm kind of in love with the main character, Charlie Eppes. I don't know if they effect of 3 years of physics lectures going, 'Yeah, the concept's fine, can you just put all the intervening steps back into the maths so I can understand it?', but there's something exceedingly cool about being able to do maths really really well. Also there is a very nice family dynamic going on with Charlie, his brother the FBI agent and their dad. And it is rarely as traumatising as some other crime programmes I could mention. I am willing to overlook the implausibility that anyone, however intelligent, can be an expert in every form of mathematics known to humanity, and the fact that the mathematics department appears to only have three members of staff, none of whom actually seem to spend much time working for the university.

Earthquake!
Mar. 1st, 2008 11:09 pmSo the earthquake did not appear to reach Belfast, though apparently Donegal had one earlier.
elerrina_amanya has been using the laptop to do a project for uni, so have not been around much the last few days. I've been reading a book on history/philosophy of quantum physics instead, and when I did get on the internet tonight it was to check up on which was which of Bohr and Born (according to wikipedia, he was the grandfather of Olivia Newton-John) and Bohm (so inconsiderate of them all to have names beginning with B).
Have no icons of quantum mechanics, it being unobservable and all that, so going with the Orion Nebula.

Bluuuu ray
Feb. 21st, 2008 10:08 pmSo, Blu-ray is apparently the next format and HD DVD is set to go the way of Betamax.
I don't think it'll take off that well, though. For a start, DVD is good enough quality for most people, or at least the difference it's great enough that everyone is going to buy a new copy of films they already own.
Secondly, there are so many ways to play DVDs that don't play Blu-ray. Most computers will, set-top boxes and portable DVD players. It's not just a case of the VCR wearing out and replacing it with a DVD player.
And thirdly, aren't we all meant to be downloading all our visual media off iTunes, like, the week after next?

Geek stuff
Feb. 19th, 2008 10:36 pmThat sound you hear? A million Harmoanians crying out in triumph. Me, I'm withholding judgement pending photographic evidence.
I ordered a wireless router on Saturday which was meant to arrive the next business day. Guess what, no sign of it. NTL did send me an email offering remote installation. Oi, give me the instructions and I'll set it up myself, and secure it. It would be horribly mean of them not to send complete instructions so you had to get them to install it :(
Went to see Jumper tonight with
elerrina_amanya. ( Minor Spoilers )

A Family Affair: Vorkosigan fic
Feb. 15th, 2008 09:34 pmIvan-fic the second: Being the further (mis)adventures of Ivan Vorpatril at the Emperor's Wedding.
Ivan considered starting a drinking game. If he was half-drunk and Miles was half his weight, that should even things up...

"I don't imagine I'll get the opportunity to say this very often in my life." Ivan paused. "Gregor, you idiot."
