Pottering along
Feb. 9th, 2007 09:43 pmToday's the day for starting a chapter-a-day re-read of HP if you want to finish in time for Deathly Hallows.
Anna Nicole Smith has died. I haven't seen so much fuss over cause of death since Diana died.
Perhaps now we can finally hear the last of Jade Goody? It's astonishing how people stay famous for being famous, especially when they became famous for something like a reality show in the first place.
Oh, and when the news hit
ohnotheydidnt, it BRAKE TEH INTARWEBZ LiveJournal
Oh, and it looks like we'll finally be getting a list of tags to choose from on the update page at some point. Only about two years behind...

"HMSS" and "Learning the World"
Feb. 8th, 2007 08:44 pmJanuary seems to have been my month for first-contact novels. I have been reading other books, but none I feel like reviewing.
His Majesty's Starship by Ben Jeapes (published in America as The Ark)
( Spoilers for His Majesty's Starship )
Learning the World: A Novel of First Contact by Ken McLeod
( Spoilers for Learning the World )
I'm also reading Singularity Sky by Charles Stross, but I keep being interrupted and losing the thread of the story, so I have to backtrack a few scenes.

Feb. 6th, 2007 09:03 pmAdblock Plus is the best Firefox extension in the world ever. Even when I'm logged out, all I see is a wilted shrunken frame where the ad used to be. :)
We have a release date!!!
I want to read all the others in order before I get #7. When do you think I should start?
It's sad in a way, because after this there will be no more new Harry Potter books, unless JKR sends Harry to Unseen University or something.

Jan. 26th, 2007 09:08 pmQuestion:
Is there more than one tune to The Flowers of the Forest? I've Googled about a bit, and I've found a couple of midis of the tune that everyone's bound to have heard, the one played by the lone piper, but I'm sure I've heard those lyrics sung to another tune at some point.

Jan. 18th, 2007 09:55 pmI hope all of you over on the mainland are all right. We seemed to get the worst of the wind during the night, and even that wasn't too bad; our slates, which were mended last week, are mostly still on and there were no big branches down on the road down to the town. Of course, practically all the loose ones must have come down in the gales in the autumn.

Jan. 12th, 2007 08:53 pmI saw a man reading this on the bus this afternoon. If house prices in the UK get any higher, you'll be able to sell your English semi and buy the White House.
It's been very windy this evening, like the last few weeks. I don't know about 'warming', but anyone who doesn't admit to wacky climate change must never go outside.
My Firefox has started, for certain sites like LJ, slotting in 'unsafe' in bold above the 'Open in new window' and 'Open in new tab' options in the right-click menu. It's very annoying because I keep opening windows instead of tabs, and I don't know what's causing it. Anyone have any idea?

Jan. 1st, 2007 04:50 pmI didn't even bother seeing in midnight last night; I went to bed and slept. Well, mostly; the new year is coming in very windy. Some slates are flapping up and down near the roof-ridges. My dad went up with a ladder and discovered that all the slates next to the ridges were cut off too short and needed to be replaced. Fun.
What have I achieved in 2006? Well, I had a full-time up-at-0700-every-morning job for 10 months of the year, 's got to count for something, hasn't it?
I can't be bothered with introspection; I want to post this and refresh my calender to see it roll over into 2007. :)

Dec. 25th, 2006 06:44 pmI hope everyone is having a happy Christmas.
My loot: Master and Commander two-disc special edition, two books, a red purse, a pair of slippers (one size too small), Doctor Who calendar, calender with owls on it, Doctor Who poster, claydough snowman for decorating the tree, chocolate.
We've been watching the PotC2 DVD I gave
elerrina_amanya. The plot is a bit holey compared to the first one. Just why is the East India Company guy able to go around arresting all these people? Why are the marines taking orders from a civilian?
Must go now to get the VCR revved up in time for Runaway Bride.

Dec. 23rd, 2006 10:01 pmI have all my presents all wrapped, yay. Sadly we have visitors tomorrow, so my mam is running around cleaning and saying, 'Where is present X? I can't find it anywhere! Perhaps I've already wrapped it?'
Muffin has deflated his head (actually it turned out that it wasn't really swollen up, it was all the gunk from his ear making the fur stick out) and is back to his normal self, not to mention his normal greedy eating habits.
Two days till we get more Doctor Who! The Runaway Bride doesn't have very fancy hair to be at her wedding, does she? Also, how come her dress has shoulders in it instead of the strapless shelf-boob ones that are in all the shops?
I haven't watched Torchwood for two weeks, although I hear last week's wasn't bad, and we have it on video. I think this makes me not a fan.
Also, LJ still hasn't fixed the bug where the mood icon preview overlaps the labels for the comment settings field. Sigh.
Merry Christmas, flist!
