Signal boosting
Mar. 30th, 2010 06:33 pmThe government are trying to rush the Digital Economy Bill into law before they have to announce a General Election. It would put the onus on ISPs to prevent customers from downloading copyrighted material -- this would likely involve deep packet inspection, the digital equivalent of opening your letters. The cost of doing so will inevitable raise the price of internet access, and the wrong people will no doubt be disconnected. The fact that it came about in the present format by Mandelson cosying up to Big Media only adds nausea to indignation.
Write to your MP to ask them to have the bill properly debated.

That was a bit random
Mar. 29th, 2010 10:22 pmDonated blood today. Among the many questions they asked (I must always look like I'm likely to faint, because the nurses always check I'm feeling ok loads of times -- for blood draws as well -- even though it's never taken a fizz out of me yet) was whether I'd had a smallpox vaccination recently.
Hardly likely, for a software developer.

As the weather has been so spring-like lately (I've been considering digging out my sunglasses, if I didn't think I'd look stupid wearing sunglasses in March), I had a go at cleaning out my winter wardrobe.
I only found a couple of shirts that I haven't worn at some point in the last six months. I have now donated them to the thrift shop down the road. It's not that I have a particularly small or well-organised wardrobe, it's just that I tend to procrastinate my ironing until there is nothing left to wear to work, and so work through it. Admittedly some of my interchangeable black work trousers or white shirts may not have been worn in the last six months, but I can't actually tell.
Probably I should tackle my shoes next. Need to make room for more, after all ;)
What's your criteria for getting rid of superfluous clothes? What do you think of the six-month rule?

That's two good reasons to look forward to Easter. (The other being coffee.)

Debugging the washer-dryer
Jan. 19th, 2010 09:44 amI am clearly a software engineer to the core; my first instinct when the washing machine-cum-tumble dryer started acting up, once I had it convinced to run again, was to repeat the program that caused the problem. Possibly this is not such a good idea with a ten-stone piece of electrical equipment that fills with hot water as it is with a Java web app.
Basically every time I ran the dryer, it stopped near the end giving an error that the drain was blocked. If you emptied the drain pump into a bucket it would then run onwards. This morning I tried to give my towels a ten-minute spin in the dryer, and they came out wetter than they went in, and this time it started complaining that the water inlet was blocked. It's drying, I don't want water to come in!
I'd googled a bit and I thought the original error was possibly due to the condenser being blocked, but now I'm not so sure. I hope I haven't made things worse by keeping running it. I was going to do a wash on its own and see if that caused the error (partly motivated by the fact that I am running out of clean socks), but I'm a bit afraid to now.

Numb3rs cut from 22 to 16 episodes. I suppose that means the end is nigh.
I know I haven't been watching it much lately, but still. SADFACE.
