1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks.

Stream if it's natural, sheugh if not.

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called.

Trolley. And it's a supermarket.

3. A metal container to carry a meal in.

Lunch box. But they're made of plastic.

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in.

Frying pan.

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people.

Sofa or couch. Settle if it's made of wood.

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof.

The horizontal bits are guttering, the verticals are downspouts.

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening.

Veranda. Not a thing that we have much need for in Ireland. Oh, I suppose some patios are sort of covered.

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages.

Soft drinks.

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup.

Pancakes.

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself.

A sub.

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach.

Swimming trunks.

12. Shoes worn for sports.

If they're canvas with rubber soles, gutties. Anything else is trainers.

13. Putting a room in order.

Redding up.

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark.

Sellafield midges? No Irish insects naturally glow in the dark.

15. The little insect that curls up into a ball.

Slater.

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down.

See-saw.

17. How do you eat your pizza?

In my hands, bite the point off and keep going.

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?

Jumble sale. Except that it's more a collective effort.

19. What's the evening meal?

Dinner.

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

A thing under a house is a basement, which most houses here don't have. Also rec room is games room and I assume that furnace is the central heating boiler.

21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places?

Water fountain? The last place I saw one was in school. Offices have watercoolers.

I appear to have lost my Boots card. Again.

I was in the shop and I remember holding it in my hand as I walked to the door, but what did I do with it? It's not in my wallet and I've checked my pockets...

Other people do method acting. I seem to do method writing.

I've been writing fic from the pov of an American character this week. Today in work my team-mates were highly amused to discover that I had dated all the screen dumps I'd printed on Tuesday "4/1/08".
owl: woe is the Doctor (woe)
So alledgedly Virgin Media (my ISP) is making moves to implement the 'three strikes and NO INTARWEBZ' policy on illegal downloading..

Woez! How shall I get my Numb3rs fix? There is about an 18-month lag time from it being shown in America and it being shown here (and then it's on ITV3 late at night, sigh). [livejournal.com profile] theoriginalspy, I hope that you keep up with the recaps :-/ *clings to [livejournal.com profile] theoriginalspy like Charlie to his laptop*

Also BSG, although the lag time is not horrendous. I can wait. Yeah, really.

Incidentally, I first got fannish about both these programs while I was watching downloaded episodes. I'd seen them on television, but they were just something that I watched when they were on (like Diagnosis Murder in university, but much less embarrassing). Guess what I went out and did once I'd got hooked on the downloads? Yeah, I bought the DVDs. So everybody won! The companies got £££ and I got new sandpits! Gah!

(I never download music or films. I have my own source of free music; it's called 'baby brother who gets paid to go to school and hence has money to burn'. Don't know what we'll do when he goes to uni next year, though.)

TV stuff

No, I'm not doing a boycott of LJ all by myself. I'm just feeling a bit bleh about doing anything that requires effort. Also bleh about TV at the minute.

Doctor Who is back next week and I only have the tiniest bit of squee in a sea of apprehension. The promotional interviews do not tend to confidence.

I haven't seen the last couple of Torchwood. This is partly due to being away from the broadband and BBC iPlayer over Easter, but not wholly

Have more or less given up on Ashes to Ashes instead of hanging around waiting for it to become Life on Mars.

And Diane Farr is leaving Numb3rs after the current series finishes. Not that we're actually going to see that till about 2011 at the rate it gets over here legally, and the government will possibly have got around to the whole CONFISCATE UR INTARWEBZ 4 ILLEGAL DOWNLOADIN BY THEN. Sigh. I hate that thing where people leave TV programmes. Numb3rs was there before Megan and it will be after, but there are other people who can't be replaced, and it makes me a bit nervous.

So, I had lost Going Postal. Well, [livejournal.com profile] elerrina_amanya found it again. In the bookcase in my bedroom.

So, Torchwood. Depressing Y/N? I do so like Rhys/Gwen though now. And Tosh and Gwen working together, they should do that more often.

All over LJ: Arthur C. Clarke has died

He was the first scence fiction author I ever read. I was aged nine.

And Match it for Pratchett now has its own website

Oooh! LJArchive has started working for me again! For about three years it hasn't been. Well, that's one good thing that's come out of the latest LJ debacle.

You are the typical teenager
You can hear the frequency of the mosquito teen repellent - but probably not for much longer!

The highest pitched ultrasonic mosquito ringtone that I can hear is 17.7kHz
Find out which ultrasonic ringtones you can hear!

I can just about hear the 17.7 Hz; above that I can hear the speakers click but nothing else. Still, not bad for someone who hasn't been a teenager since 2003.

I've just transferred all my posts over to insanejournal. Sorry for the mad spam, flist on ij.

Sadly the tags didn't transfer across. Grrrr.

Now I'm going to try to double-post to both journals using Semagic

ONE DAY CONTENT STRIKE

For one day, Friday, March 21, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.

SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site.

So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT, let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT.

This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase.

Full information at The Fox's Den.

SPREAD THE WORD!

First they do away with Basic accounts for new users, then they censor fanfiction from the "popular interests" page. Ever feel a little squeezed?

MATCH IT FOR PRATCHETT

Today, it was announced that Terry Pratchett has donated half a million pounds to Alzheimer's research. Hearing that, it occurred to me that if half a million of us all donated a pound to Alzheimer's research, we could match his donation and make it an even million.

So whaddaya say, guys? It's a pound. That's about 2 bucks US dollars, give or take a couple of (US) pennies. You can spare that much. Go here and make your donation. Tell them it's in honour of Terry Pratchett.

Let's do it!

Grrrrr SUP

No new Basic accounts can be created as of yesterday.

So, are we leaving LJ now or what? Where's everyone's backups? I'm catre on GJ and jediowl on JF, and am on IJ as thewhiteowl.

I mean, I don't want to leave LJ. I like it here. I have a perm account (until SUP decides to downgrade it to Plus). But if everyone else goes, there's nothing to stay for.

Cannot be bothered to watch this week's Torchwood in the iPlayer. Everyone's saying it's rubbish, so I may give it a miss.

So. Latest cracked-out speculation for DW S4.

DO NOT WANT. I mean, what's the point? Sadly, I suspect Team Cardiff may think this the best concept since sliced bread.

Er, hello?

Eeek. Building falls down in Victoria Street. No, it didn't blow down; the storm hasn't really hit here yet; apparently it DED OF CONCREET.

I am completely TEH FAILZ at ordering birthday presents. [livejournal.com profile] elerrina_amanya likes to be surprised. I'm the opposite, and in fact spent some time last weekend going 'Tell me what you bought me!' Still. Ordering the present to the house with the letterbox would be a good idea, eejit.

LOLarious (literally) Torchwood fic.

"Is that a talking cat?" Jack asked, off in the distance.

"It does appear to be," Ianto said carefully. The cat leapt from his shoulder to Tosh's desk. The others gathered round slowly.

"I HAS A HOOMANS," the cat continued.

OK, LJ: divvy up the comment notifications now, please.

Is it just me or are the rest of you not getting them either?

So.

Ian Paisley is giving up leadership of the DUP.

It's not like I liked the man. And I think the DUP sold out. Nevertheless. It's like getting up in the morning and seeing that Cave Hill has shifted into the lough in the night.
