Okay, anyone up for any more? Fanfic's under this tag.

Okay, here's a question for you: who has destroyed the greater number of irreplaceable historical artefacts, Indiana Jones or the Bonekickers team?

Indy gives you more bang for your buck, but Bonekickers has more regularity and sticking power. They do it once a week!

I'm no archaeologist, but I was wincing this week.

Tor.com has put up all the ebooks they've been giving away over the last few months. This week only, so what are you waiting for? If you fancy a free electronic copy of Spin, Farthing, or Old Man's War, among others, get over there now.

So two out of the three reviews I got for Things We Can't Untie on ff.net accused me of writing St Charlie and Bad Don.

I was more shooting for Confused and Unhappy Don and There Is a Reason I'm Outta This Job Megan. Charlie wasn't even in the fic, although of course the issue was going to come up.

I do hate it when I fail so miserably at getting across what I mean in fic. And of course the negative reviews are all anonymous so I can't reply to them.

I do think that Charlie is closer to right than Don in this case. Don's rulebending is in the direction of interfering with suspects' civil rights, while Charlie's is in support of freedom of speech. Looks like ff.net is full of neo-cons, then.

Title: Things We Can't Untie
Rating: PG
Characters: Don, Megan
Summary: Megan's leaving LA, but she and Don have a few things to say to each other first. Gen.
Canon has left this an almighty blank. Ah, well, DIY is fun.
Notes: This was written shortly after the finale, even though I'm only posting it now. So there are rather a lot of my first thoughts in it. The title is from a song called That's No Way To Say Goodbye, which I thought was apposite. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shallanelprin and Rittenden for beta-ing.

owl: Don towing Charlie out of harm's way. (Charlie&Don)

Title: The Trouble With Road Trips
Rating: G
Summary: The Eppes family goes on a road trip. Everyone lives, just about. A little!Eppes fic.
Word Count: 1533
Notes: Another one for the Summer Alphabet Challenge 2008. The germ of this fic came when I was watching Black Swan and Charlie got so bored on the stakeout. I was discussing the episode with [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha and I commented 'I bet he used to drive Don insane on road trips when they were kids. Has anyone written fic of this?' So, yes, well, here it is.

Fic under here. May contain slight traces of calculus )

I watched Bonekickers on the iPlayer. It looks to me as if if features as much real archaeology as Doctor Who features real physics. Oh, it also features Martha's sister as audience exposition. It'd the sort of thing where there might be an actual true fact in there, but you can't tell amidst all the fantasy, so you have to remember where it comes from so you don't quote it as fact.

The meme that comes round every so often: Choose one of my fics and I'll do a DVD-style commentary for it.
owl: (Charlie)

Title: England.
Rating: G
Word Count: 1000. In other words, it's a (drabble)^3/2
Summary: Charlie at Cambridge, in 1000 words. First impressions, climate statistics, first love and family.
Notes: Another one from the 2008 Summer Alphabet Challenge. This is a fic about an English city, from the viewpoint of an American, written by an Irishwoman. I was strongly tempted to subtitle it A Californian Mathematician at the University of Cambridge, but I resisted. This is also something of an experiment for me, stylistically, but I think it worked.
Disclaimer: Not my characters.

On to the fic! )

owl: Don towing Charlie out of harm's way. (Charlie&Don)
I saw the tail end of The Janus List on ITV3 tonight, and now I have plot bunnies for last year's finale. Actually, having seen When Worlds Collide, you could have a really nice little irony thing going on there. Don thinking that at least there's one person who's not going to to turn out to be a Chinese spy...little does he know, poor boy.

If you've been around here for long, you'll have noticed I like to run characters from my fandoms through a Myers-Briggs test, and I thought I'd try Numb3rs.

There are four pairs of letters: Extraverted/Introverted, whether they get energy from acting and dealing with people, or from reflecting on ideas. iNtuitive/Sensing, whether they take in information as a system and internalise it, or focus on the concrete and the details of the real world. Thinking/Feeling, whether they make decisions based on logic or emotions. And Judging/Perceiving, how they organise themselves in relation to the world. Js are organised, tidy and decisive, while Ps are flexible and spontaneous.

What do you all think? Particularly Don, he's so hard to pin down.

Beta version under testing here.

It's a lot better than the last attempt they made. The only problems for me are 1) too much whitespace at the top and not enough at the bottom 2) still no link to the tags page after how many years?

This was me hacking around with the code for ten minutes to try to fix the excess whitespace.

What do you all think of it?

For the first time since New Who came back, I am not feeling bereft on the first Saturday after it finished.

To be fair, I have been a little distracted this week. Or perhaps I'm turning into an adult. Or a mundane? Oh noes!

I accepted Job #2 today. Went into the office and dropped off the acceptance letter by hand, so there's no taking it back now :) I think I perhaps need to make a tag for this, any ideas?

All that remains is to extricate myself from Job #1. Ah, well, four-day weekend thanks to the Twelfth being on a Saturday, I don't have to think about it yet.

I've been walking more and trying to cut out sweets etc, and when I came home this weekend, my mother said, "You've lost so much weight! Those trousers are hanging on you!" So I appear to have lost 4lb in the last fortnight. I think I should do some weights to try and tone my arms and upper body.

Bus crash

Jul. 2nd, 2008 10:36 pm
owl: Northern Ireland from orbit (home)
I saw two buses colliding today. Bus #1 was pulled in (badly) at a stop. Bus #2 tried to go around it and didn't quite succeed. Bang, grind, crunch. The final ironic touch is that bus #1 was pink. How could anyone miss seeing it?

I feel sorry for the passengers. They'll never get to wherever they were going.

Can it be next week already? Tomorrow?

So I downloaded Firefox 3 on Download Day (my birthday, incidentally), but I haven't got around to installing it yet.

Is anyone using it already? Bugs, issues with add-ons? Should I start using it now?

I'm late with this review because our electricity has been intermittent all weekend. It could have been much worse. It could have gone off in the middle of the episode.
