Star Wars day
May. 19th, 2005 08:54 pm24 hours from now I shall officially be a gibbering wreck. I wish I had been able to see it tonight.
I heard an interview with Natalie Portman on Radio 1. She was doing the 'dance-round-the-spoilers' game, and she was very enthusiastic about Hayden, Ewan etc, as actors. Speaking of Natalie Portman, it is totally unfair that anyone can look as good as that with no hair.
I'm rather afraid that I shan't be well tomorrow. I've had a sore throat on and off for a couple of weeks, and it feels like it's developing into a real cold. So unfair, considering I only get ill about once every 18 months normally. Still, I will be there at the cinema tomorrow if I have to crawl.

1)Total number of books I've owned?
Well, my family own at least 12,000. How many of those are mine, I have no idea, but I estimate somewhere around 1500-2000.
2) The last book I bought?
Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett. There are almost thirty books in the series, so I'm acquiring them gradually.
3) The last book I read?
Desolation Island by Patrick O'Brian. Age-of-sail is like my blankie fandom. I can return to it any time.
4) Five books that mean a lot to me:
-The Bible. No-brainer, that one.
-Lord of the Rings
I was twelve, younger and a girl. I needed to increase my geek credit with the boys I was friends with. I read it in six days including the Appendices. Then I moved on to
-the Silmarillion. There's just something about a mythology with its own languages. And maps. I like maps.
-Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St John. This was my favourite book when I was five or six. I spent a couple of years pretending to be the main characters, named my cat after a cat in the book, read it till my copy fell to pieces...
-The Harry Potter series. Do I need to explain this one?
Five people whose answers to this meme I would like to see:
This
is not a chain letter. If you break the chain, you will NOT have bad
luck. If you don't break the chain, nobody will send you lots of money
or (as a chain letter I once received demanded) ladies' underwear.
Given this caveat, I gently nudge the following people:
Well, most of my flist has already done it or is having exams or family crises or is off in the Canadian wilderness planting trees. So...

Which icon of mine can't you stand?
May. 18th, 2005 09:54 pmAn attempt to start a meme:
Which icon of mine can't you stand?
There are lots of icons that are cheesy, fuzzy, obscene, have epilepsy-inducing animation or annoyingly small text, or were obviously made badly in Paint. You like the person, you just can't stand their icon when it turns up in your flist.
So. Which of my icons is like nails-on-a-blackboard for you? Comment and post this in your own journal.

May. 16th, 2005 07:15 pm1. In which ways do you feel your love for the sciences shape your writing?
Well, my fandoms are all soft SF, basically fantasy with spaceships, so I have to suspend my disbelief to a large extent just like everyone else. However I do like to find or work out cod-scientific explanations for things. fro example, because of time dilation in the Special Theory of relativity, Han and Leia took 2 or 3 months to get from Hoth to Bespin at a high fraction of lightspeed, but subjectively it took them nineteen days.
2. Which of your stories satisfied you the most as an author?
Rebel Heart is my baby, the one I've put the most effort into and the one I feel most attached to. But the one I like best to reread is An Engagement Is Announced. I sit there going 'I can't believe I wrote something this funny!' to myself.
3. If you were to host a message board, what would be the theme or the thrust? The title?
Hmm. Given the current so, so sad dearth of them on the 'net at the moment, it would have to be a Luke Skywalker fan board. :) As for the name...meh. I'm awful at titles. Pass.
4. Research or instruction in your future, if you could have things your way?
Oh, research. I'm pretty useless at teaching. I'd far rather find out things for myself than teach them to others. Although that's all right if the others actually are interested and want to learn, but even at university level you don't get that all the time.
5. Einstein or Hawking?
Hard question. I'll go with Einstein, as at least I could understand about 10% of what he was talking about.
If any of the rest of you want to interview me, or be interviewed, comment to this post.

Changes aren't always for the better
May. 14th, 2005 02:36 pmLiveJournal have disabled logging in as a community, and there's no way to switch user when using http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console. So rather than pasting in one text file of commands to change the URLs for the moodtheme of
lukelovers, I have to use http://www.livejournal.com/manage/moodthemes.bml, and paste in the URL 132 times. And the stupid thing doesn't work half time and wants to inherit moods from others and won't save changes.
Grrrr.
Grrrr.
6 RotS icons.
( RotS spoilers )
I thought that the text on the first three was singularly appropriate.
Comment, credit is nice but not necessary, not hotlinking.

And I finally talk about Star Wars
May. 12th, 2005 09:26 pmI can hardly believe it's one week till RotS. I was sorely tempted by the novelisation in Eason's today, especially as the cover sticker said, 'Get a FREE Star Wars paperback with this book!' but when I checked the small print and found it was a free NJO book, the attraction waned somewhat. I did just peep a little, though.Only the first couple of pages.
Shopping list for my cinematic viewing of RotS:
Blanket. Use: Hiding behind in the scary bits.
Grow out my fingernails. Use: Chew off in the tense bits, ie the Duel
Tissues, extra strong, lots of. Use: self-evident
Gag. Use: To stop me from screaming 'NOOOOOOO!' or 'ANAKIN, YOU MORON!!' at the psychological moments.Or, indeed, 'Growl, Jedi, growl!'
Anakin plushie. Use: weeping into as I leave the cinema. Do you think that they'd market them with a growling soundbox? Hey, a fangirl can dream...
I left a couple of pages of my fanfic that I'd been proofing in work today. On an embarrassment level that has the potential of leaving fanart lying around when the minister comes to visit, although he wouldn't know Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala if she came up and introduced herself. Worse still, I buried the electricity bill somewhere among it, so if the fic goes in the bin it does too.
( I am 45% normal. Meme gakked from sollersuk )
Hey, I'm less weird than I thought!

Or in other words, my journal has been All About The Who for the last month or so. :) Apologies to most of my flist, who are Star Wars and Potter fans. I will return to SW with a bang (or, more probably, a scream) when RotS is released (in one week!! Eeeeee!!) and HP when HBP comes out. Besides we're about halfway through Doctor Who already *weeps*.
I just love this programme. The Doctor/Rose interaction, the throwaway lines like( Very minor spoilers )
And I love the way that half the country are fans. You hear people talking about it on the bus. It's always being mentioned on the radio. The TV announcer knows that the proper place to watch it is from behind the sofa. My parents can hum the theme. We even had political broadcasts in the runup to the General Election that were referring to it and had the theme playing in the background. I have a fandom that is respectable!

Doctor Who fic
May. 4th, 2005 10:08 pmYou know, it's really hard to write stuff in a fandom where the canon gets superseded each week. Untitled short fic, set just after Adam steps inside the TARDIS. Unrequited shipiness in various directions, the Doctor is still ambiguous so no one will bite me, I'm not entirely happy with it and
doyle_sb4 has already written this setting about ten times better than I did, curse her :-P
( Written after 'Dalek'. Nine, Rose and Adam. No sex, don't worry. )
